Dear Challengers

It is merchandize time again.
Today i wanna tell you about plan9.
Plan 9 is an advanced operating system, designed to replace linux/unix, by unifying and fixing problems with the original design.
This beast, developed by the creators of unix and C, treats *everything* as a file.
This means that a remote desktop is as easy as mounting a remote screen file.

The project wants more users who try it out and give feedback.
If you like, you can contact jrmu@ircnow.org for a free demo account.
They are offering access to vps of an unofficial fork of the project, 9front.
We would also be happy to see you in their ircs://irc.ircnow.org:6697/#plan9. Here is an IRC Intro.

I'll give it a shot. What's different between the demo account vs just downloading it from the web site?

I heard about Plan9 a long time ago. No full featured we browser sounds like it will be hard to use considering everything is browser based now.

I am not sure,

Their demo accounts are *probably* just in case you do not want to setup your own box.

But that's only a believe.

If you're serious about Plan9, you shouldn't miss "Introduction to Operating Systems Abstractions Using Plan 9 from Bell Labs" by Francisco J. Ballesteros (see here).

Last time I ran Plan9 (in 2016) it was on QEMU using 9front's ISO images:
GeSHi`ed bash code for QEMU

qemu-system-i386 -cpu qemu32 -m 1024 -boot order=c \
  -device VGA,romfile=vgabios.bin \
  -device sb16,irq=7 \
  -netdev user,id=net,net=192.168.56.0/24 \  -device rtl8139,netdev=net,mac=52:54:00:00:EE:03 \
  -device isa-ide,id=ide \
  -drive if=none,id=vd0,media=disk,file=disk.qcow2 \
  -device ide-hd,drive=vd0,bootindex=1 \
  -drive if=none,id=vd1,media=cdrom \  -device ide-cd,drive=vd1 \

  -device usb-storage,bus=ehci.0,drive=vd2,bootindex=2

NOTE: The "vgabios.bin" is a QEMU vgabios ROM image. I used a modified one, so I can remember if specifying one is required or not.
